Ethiopia: Mental health efforts underway

    Efforts are underway to provide mental health services to the public in all health institutions across the country, General Manager of Emanuel Mental Health Hospital said.

    Hospital's General Manager, Dr. Kesetebirhan Admasu told ENA on Sunday that though the hospital has been providing a diploma level psychiatry nursing training to health professionals, it could not meet the high demand of mental health service.

    Currently, activities are underway to offer short term training on mental health to nurses and health officers working in all health facilities. A 30-day relevant training is being provided to 62 health professionals .

    The manager said St. Paulos General Hospital has been giving mental health service to in-patients, Efforts are underway to expand the service to other hospitals.

    Dr. Kesetebirhan said preparation are finalized to open a mental health service section in Yekatit 12 Hospital to render the service both to children and adults.

    The hospital has finalized preparation to launch treatment of neurological diseases and disorders.

    The hospital has been expanding mental health services with the financial support of the World Health Organization.
