Egyptian forces fire at Eritrean migrant

    An Eritrean migrant was shot and injured by Egyptian border forces on Saturday while he attempted to sneak into neighbouring Israel, AFP said.

    Security forces said the victim was caught near the Sinai Peninsula’s border with Israel along with two other compatriots, but the injured man did not respond to warnings to stop. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

    A total number of 22 migrants were arrested near the Israeli border with Egypt this week.

    Human Rights Watch, HRW, urged Egypt on Friday to stop shooting foreign migrants who try to cross into Israel.

    The New York-based rights group said Egyptian border police have killed at least 85 unarmed migrants trying to cross into Israel since July 2007, most of them Sudanese and Eritrean.

    Egypt has always defended its policy that border guards first fire warning shots in the air.

    A Cairo-based representative of HRW told AFP more migrants were killed trying to leave Egypt than any other country.

    The border between Israel and Egypt is 255 kilometre long, and is guarded by 750 Egyptian policemen, as stipulated by the 1979 Camp David accords between Egypt and Israel.

    Drug traffickers also use the border for smuggling.
