Egypt retain African Nations Cup

  1. The Pharaohs of Egypt opened another chapter in their football history when they retained the Africa Cup of Nations after narrowly beating an impressive youthful Ghana side 1-0 on Sunday in Angola.

Substitute Mohamed Gedo broke Ghana's heart when he scored five minutes from time for Egypt to become the first team to win the African Nations Cup three times in succession.

The Pharaohs might have won the game 1-0 but they struggled to play the Ghana side which has surprised many and was never given the chance with the absence of their key players among them Chelsea star Michael Essien who got injured during their first game against Ivory Coast.

Though they failed to lift the Cup, Ghana can walk tall having managed to reach the finals after over 10 years. The youthful team were looking for their first Nations Cup title since 1982.

The Egyptian player Gedo netted with a fine curling shot from inside the box after he exhanged passes with Mohammed Zidan who was well marked by the Ghana defence to give Egypt a record seventh title in the continental tournament.

Gedo's goal was his fifth making him the top scorer for the tournament whereas his captain Mohammed Hassan was voted player of the tournament.

The Pharaohs, unbeaten in their last 19 Nations Cup games, were pipped by Algeria for a World Cup finals spot but they beat four World Cup-bound teams en route to their triumph.

The tournament has ended on a fine note and impressed the African continent despite starting on a bad note when Togo pulled out after their team was attacked by rebels and three people died.

Malawi who were tipped as underdogs at the tournament were a surprise package when they beat World Cup bound team Algeria 3-0 in their first game.
