- It was four years ago since we've last been in Barrydale (passing by a lot) and things have changed significantly over there. What a Vibe!!! We knew already the labyrinth of Frazer; Ronnies Sexshop and the Warmwaterberg, all 20 km towards Ladysmith. Inside Barrydale however there is Life nowadays. We went to the artists of Magpie opposite the village hotel along the Jan van Riebeeck Street. 'Rubbish' is recycled into art and the Magpie boys export their chandeliers and other objects all over the world. The next adress was Desert Fish ("we don't serve fish, sorry"). Het grootste deel van de ‘buitenlanders’ die voor het eerst Zuidafrika bezoeken doen dat georganiseerd in toerbussen. Er is een overvloed aan toermogelijkheden; van lokaal (vb. 3 dagen Kaapstad) tot nationaal (Zuidafrika in 21 dagen). Na afloop is iedereen hondsmoe en alleen de gemaakte foto’s en videos vertellen de reis. Zonder deze (audio-)visuele hulpmiddelen blijft er weinig of niets te herinneren over. Deze begeleide toeren laten de reizigers slechts de zogenoemde toeristische hoogtepunten zien maar het echte Zuidafrika ontdekken zit er helaas niet in. - De Robertson Wijn Vallei is een beetje 'een ondergeschoven kind' in het rijtje van Zuidafrikaanse wijngebieden. Dat is jammer want volgens wijnkenners, inclusief wijnimporteurs (hoger marktsegment) uit Europa komen enkele van de beste Zuidafrikaanse wijnen juist uit dit gebied. Daarbij komt dat de reiswereld, met betrekking tot de Westkaap, voornamelijk is gefocused op Kaapstad en directe omgeving en de Tuinroete.
