EU, civil society and media save biodiversity

    The nearly 100,000 thousand Sierra Leoneans living directly within or upon the fringes of the Western area Peninsula Forest are witnessing something new recently. Through the WAPFOR Project, the EU is providing funds through Welt Hunger Hilfe to conserve the forest and its watershed.

    To change the attitudes of the people, film festivals are being carried to the fringe communities in thirty-odd locations with conservation, biodiversity, climate change and natural resource managements as main topics. Implemented by the Union of Environmental Journalists through the ENGO consortium, ENFORAC, the road-show is attracting larger than expected audiences.

    Africanews.com witnessed the most recent of these performances at Tombo, a peninsular fishing community were the forest has been partially cleared for firewood and fish smoking. After a workshop on alternatives to this practice, the objective was displayed again through film. All ages of resident showed up for the free display.

    Despite improvements in hydro power, the 15,000 people of Tombo have not been connected and visual documentaries of development initiatives are a rarity.
