    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission dragged Chief Albert Chikwe, husband of Nigeria Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland, to court over N40 million fraud.
    Chikwe who was arraigned before Justice M. Banjo of the Federal High Court, Owerri was slammed with a four-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence and issuance of bounced cheque. He was arraigned last Friday.
    Chikwe was said to have sold three plots of land to Chief Innocent Obi in Owerri for N40m. When the latter went to the land registry in Owerri in 2008 to register his title, he was told that the land belonged to the government.
    The same development was confirmed by a director in the ministry, prompting Chikwe to promise to pay Obi back his money
    Fulfilling his promise, Chikwe was alleged to have issued N40m bounced cheque to Obi.
    Following this, the EFCC arrested Chikwe in 2008 and after the completion of investigation, he was charged to court last Friday. However, the Judge granted him bail and adjourned hearing on the case till January 11, 2010.
    Chikwe's wife, Kema, was the Minister of Transportation and Aviation between 1999 and 2003 during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and now Nigeria Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland.
