ECOWAS boss takes up new posting in 2010

    Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas has been unanimously appointed as the new Secretary General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. Dr. Chambas, a Ghanaian, has been serving as president of the ECOWAS Commission for close to a decade. He will take up his new posting in March 2010 in Brussels.

    The ECOWAS Secretary General beats two other West African for the coveted position. Dr. Chambas will take over from Sir John Kaputin from Papua New Guinea according to ghanabusssinessnews.com

    Born 1970 in Ghana and a father of two, Dr. Chambas attended the Mfantsipim School, Cape Coast and Government Secondary School, Tamale. He also holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Ghana, M.A. PhD from the University of Ithaca, New York and a law degree from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio (USA).

    He has also served his country as a Member of Parliament, Deputy Foreign Minister and a Deputy Education Minister. He helped end the Liberian and Ivory Coast Civil war through his mediation efforts.

    He said in an interview with IRIN just after taking up his new position at ECOWAS that "We have taken over ECOWAS at a time of high expectations among the people of the sub region, among the member countries, about the prospects for integration in the sub region.

    “People want to be able to move about freely, engage in legitimate business, seek opportunities in neighbouring countries. They believe that ECOWAS was established precisely for that purpose so they expect ECOWAS to facilitate free movement of persons, goods and services.” His hobbies are soccer and horse riding.
