The President of the Commission of the West African States Economic Community (ECOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, suggested the "deployment of a protection force for civilians in Guinea where the security situation is» worrying".

"I propose a preventive deployment of forces to protect civilians and humanitarian assistance" to contribute "to creating a secure environment for the Guinean population," said Chambas during the opening of 9th Session of the International Contact Group on Guinea.

The situation in Guinea has become "alarming." It "may not only destabilize this country" but "also undermine all our efforts to consolidate peace in post conflict countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau and Côte d'Ivoire "said Mr. Chambas.
"All the ingredients for an explosive situation are gathered today in Guinea," he added.
The International Contact Group on Guinea also includes the ECOWAS, African Union (AU), the European Union (EU, UN, International Organization of Francophonie (OIF), France, the United States and Great Britain.
It meets for the first time since the assassination attempt on December 3rd the head of the junta Guinea, Captain Dadis Moussa Camara, brought to power by a coup in December 2008.
Captain Camara was wounded in the head by his aide Aboubacar Sidiki Diakité alias Toumba who opened fire on him in Koundara military camp in Conakry. Since that time Dadis is hospitalized in Morocco. His exact condition is not known.
Human Rights Violations by men in uniform against civilians have been noted in recent days in Guinea pretexting to search Toumba and people close to him, according to several sources in Conakry.
"The International Contact Group on Guinea wishes to reiterate the need for a rapid deployment on the basis of the ongoing mediation in Ouagadougou, a new body for an appeased and short term transition which lead the country in democratic and transparent elections, "continued the President of the ECOWAS Commission.
The representative of the African Union (AU) Ibrahima Fall, co-chair of the meeting, the Contact Group had to listen to the Active Forces of Guinea (opposition, unions, and civil society) and delegates of the National Council for Democracy and Development (CNDD Junta) before meeting with the mediator in the crisis in Guinea, Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaoré in his palace.
President Compaore was appointed as ECOWAS mediator after crackdown on opponents by the army, on September 28 in Conakry.
