Digging Malawi out of water problems

Villagers watched while filled with great excitement as the visitors were busy engaged in the process aimed at rescuing the natives from drinking dirty water. Yes! Under the Big Dig Project drilling of a borehole took place in Bokola Village which has changed lives of the communities forever.
    Malawi
And 36-year-old Zaina Filipo from Bokola Village which is in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwanza in Salima District on the shores of Lake Malawi in the central region of the country could not miss to witness the borehole drilling event.

Residents in Salima located 90 Km from Malawi's capital Lilongwe struggle to access safe Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities to the extent that some of them have been using Lake Malawi both as a toilet and a source for drinking water which has been fueling waterborne diseases such as cholera especially during the rainy season!

Therefore, just like other women in Bokola since Zaina was born she had always wished to access safe water near her house.

But such a wish has since time immemorial remained just a dream for Filipo and other women in her village and other neighbouring villages of Meke, Samuel and Mtambo just but mentioning a few.

“During the rainy season we have to draw dirty water for drinking and
cooking from a trench. This trench was formed due to soil erosion. The place dries and the water is unsafe because some villagers also use it as toilet through Open Defecation,” said Filipo, a mother of six children during a recent visit to her village by local journalists including some members of WASH Media Forum with support from WaterAid-Malawi.

“When the dry season comes on the other hand we have to wake up as early as 4 a.m. and walk about 3 Km to Namizu River in search for water,” she said disclosing that they have to dig on the river bed to access water.

Filipo further explained that collecting water from the river puts them at risks of being attacked including raped by criminals apart from contracting waterborne diseases such as Cholera.

“To get to the place to fetch water we have for safety reasons move in a group and sometimes under an escort of men,” she said.

However, the good news is that women from Bokola and its neighboring villages’ water woes are now a thing of the past since starting from September this year they will be drawing safe water from a borehole which was constructed with support from WaterAid Malawi and its partners under the ‘Big dig’ initiative.

In the initiative WaterAid-Malawi and its international partners including some media celebrities in the United Kingdom (UK) are raising funds for borehole drilling in Malawi.

"WaterAid's Big Dig Appeal wants to bring clean water to over 134,000 people in rural Malawi. These poor communities have no choice but to walk hours each day to collect dirty water that will make them ill. A donation of just £15 to The Big Dig Appeal will bring clean, safe water to one person for life. Join me in supporting The Big Dig Appeal and help WaterAid change lives forever," Lorraine Kelly one of the celebrities engaged in the campaign told ITV in the UK.

According to Malawi Government’s latest figures on safe water access at least 83 per 100 people in the over 13 million population are accessing safe water in the southern African nation.

“As a country with support from our donor partners we have made several outstanding strides in water development in the country,” said Malawi’s Minister responsible for Water Ritchie Bizwick Muheya.

However, a Canada based international organization, Engineers Without Borders (EWB) says while Malawi Government claims to have made some strides in safe water development and delivery to the needy the country still has to do more.

The organization says it is already working hand in hand with Malawi
Government aiming at expanding its work to increase safe water delivery to masses.

“Of the 45, 000 water points throughout Malawi, 30 percent of them are non-functional at any given time, and an additional 10 percent are redundantly sited, meaning some communities have many water points while others have none,” says the organization.

It adds that in 2010, Malawi would have already achieved its Millennium Development Goal (MDG) for water access of over 80 percent if these water points were consistently functional and were better sited.

“… but instead these problems leave Malawi with an access rate of
approximately 50 percent,” says the organization.
