Cordaid gives Humanitarian aid to Malawi

    Cordaid Netherlands through its Malawian partners Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM) has given a 100,000 Euro humanitarian aid to assist in the procurement of food supplies in the hunger stricken southern Malawian districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje.
    CDECOM National Director Costen Mulume said the 100,000 Euro aid that had already arrived in the country has been used for procurement of food for people in the two districts that are currently facing the blunt of hunger due to a poor harvest season this year.
    He said the two districts that lie in the lower shire were had hit by floods in the last glowing season and most of the area were washed away by the floods.
    “We have already purchased the food items and plus some maize seed and we are expected to start distribution by charismas day,” said Mulume.
    He said each family would be getting a 50 kg bag of maize flour, 10kgs maize seed,5kgs beans and 2 litres of cooking oil every month until February when the situation is expected to have eased.
    Cordaid earlier this year held an international meeting on disaster risk management in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe that called international community to consider issues of poverty in disaster management.
