The newfound trainer of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, Clemente, takes over from Frenchman, Paul Marie Le Guen, after a disgraceful 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign in South Africa.
He is the fifth coach of the Lions in recent years, after the Portuguese, Arthur Jorge, the Dutchman, Arie Haan, Martin Otto Pfister, a German and French - born Le Guen.
Though many consider the recent 3-0 defeat over Poland as a good omen for Clemente, he is taking over a team that had lost its winnings ways for a long time. Since January 2010, the Lions have lost seven matches and witnessed a drastic drop on the FIFA monthly rankings to the 40th position in the month of August.
He will equally be taking over a team that experienced one of the bitterest internal squabbles during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Some observers hold that the internal wranglings were at the centre of the Lions’ dismal performance.
Clemente gets into first official action with the Lions come September 4 against the Mauritius Island in Mauritius. It will be Cameroon’s opener for the qualifiers for the 2012 AFCON slated for Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Featuring in Cameroon’s group are Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
