Javier Clemente, a 60 - year - old Spaniard has been appointed the new coach for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. This is coming on the heels of a series of national and international media reports in recent days, claiming that Cameroon's football governing body, FECAFOOT had signed a two - year deal with the Spanish.

According to a Ministerial Order, Clemente will be assisted by ace Cameroonian footballer and now a trained football tactician, François Omam Biyick and the second assistant in charge of keepers, Jacques Songo’o, also a former keeper of the Lions.

Clemente is expected in Yaounde, Cameroon on August 28 to officially seal his contract with FECAFOOT and the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education. The details of the contract are yet to be made public.

The former player of Athletico Bilbao, from 1968-1971, has been laden with the task of qualifying the Lions and lift the AFCON to be co - hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in 2012.

Clemente is said to be experienced as former player and Coach who has won two Liga Championship Titles with Athletico Bilbao in 1983 and 1984. Still in 1984, he won the King’s Cup. From 1992-1998, Clemente was the boss of the Spanish national team, La Roja.
He also had a stint with Serbian national squad from 2006-2007.

The newfound trainer of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, Clemente, takes over from Frenchman, Paul Marie Le Guen, after a disgraceful 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign in South Africa.

He is the fifth coach of the Lions in recent years, after the Portuguese, Arthur Jorge, the Dutchman, Arie Haan, Martin Otto Pfister, a German and French - born Le Guen.

Though many consider the recent 3-0 defeat over Poland as a good omen for Clemente, he is taking over a team that had lost its winnings ways for a long time. Since January 2010, the Lions have lost seven matches and witnessed a drastic drop on the FIFA monthly rankings to the 40th position in the month of August.

He will equally be taking over a team that experienced one of the bitterest internal squabbles during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Some observers hold that the internal wranglings were at the centre of the Lions’ dismal performance.

Clemente gets into first official action with the Lions come September 4 against the Mauritius Island in Mauritius. It will be Cameroon’s opener for the qualifiers for the 2012 AFCON slated for Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Featuring in Cameroon’s group are Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
