   The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has finalized a suit against the government for its failure to protect Christians and their properties that have led to several deaths and damages in the country. The General Secretary of NCCK, Canon Peter Karanja said the attacks on places of worship is a crime against humanity that is shocking yet the government is still conducting business as usual in the face of such callous violations.

   

   “We appreciate the limited provision of police officers to churches but the security agencies must upscale their intelligence gathering and sharing information to pre-empt such attacks before they happen,” Karanja said.
   
   He said the status of insecurity was worrying saying that gangs are raining havoc in different parts of the county day and night.
   
   “These gangs are being used by political actors to visit intimidation on their opponents, as was clearly manifested in the violence that happened at Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo Tana River and Kisumu City,” Karanja said.
   
   Karanja further said that Kenyans are worried on the inability of the National Police Service to deal with the violence swiftly and firmly despite of prior tip offs.
   
   The General Secretary revealed that the criminal gangs are not foreigners saying they are formed and live amongst the residents of Kenya saying each community has a duty to participate in the community policing to prevent the emergence of such gangs.
   
   “As long as community members allow such gangs to fester, they will suffer and pay the heavy price of insecurity marked by extortion, rape, murder and thuggery,” he said.
   
   On the forthcoming General Election, Karanja urged the government to prepare Kenyans for this important exercise in connection with the new dispensation.
   
   He further warned Kenyans to be wary of politicians who preach tribalism saying such leaders should be voted out in the coming elections terming them as those with vested interest.
   
   “We have committed to provision of civic education and promotion of peace initiatives at national and local levels,” he said
   
   Karanja also stated that currently they are strengthening partnership with the Interim Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) in the provision of voter education to ensure a peaceful voting come March 4, 2012.
