Central-East Africa: Insecurity fails tourism

    Insecurity in the Democratic Republic of Congo caused by the Interahamwe militias has reportedly affected tourism in Bwindi and Mugahinga national parks in Uganda and other parks in the neighboring countries of Congo and Rwanda.

    Mwiine Mark, the regional enterprise officer for Trans Boundary Cooperation for Gorillas Conservation Programme says that apart from militias killing the wild animals, insecurity in this area has led to increased poaching on these animals by members of communities living close to their habitats.

    He was speaking during a 4 day workshop of community conservation team, senior game wardens and personnel from Gorilla Conservation Areas at Lake View Resort Hotel in Mbarara.

    Mwiine disclosed that some tourists were also afraid of this insecurity and they therefore opt not to visit some of these parks.

    However, during the workshop, members observed that there was a stead increase in the number of gorillas in different parks in this region but stressed that there was still much need for game wardens in Uganda, Rwanda and DR-Congo to cooperate so as to fight poaching for good.

    Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo are homes to a number of National Parks which boast a broad diversity of wildlife including Gorillas and Chimpanzees.
