Kenya is to organize a census in which the population of that country is to hit the 40 million mark according to estimates, although the Kenya National bureau of Statistics puts the estimate at 35.7 million.

The census begins Monday night though President Kibaki declared Tuesday a public holiday as the exercise goes on till August the 31st when it comes to an official close.
“The time has now come for us all to be counted. The program is on schedule. All the districts have received the materials,” Kibaki said during the 4pm television and radio address from State House Nairobi.
He urged Kenyans to stay indoors and avoid lots of movement to allow the process take place effectively.
This is the seventh census since 1948.The last one was done in 1999.The census alone is going to cost Sh7.4 billion as the nation grapples with hunger related diseases, death, water shortages and school dropouts.
The process will begin today with enumerators going to homes and villages all over the country. Bars and other night clubs have been ordered by the Nairobi Provincial Commissioner Ndirangu Njoroge to close business by 7.30pm to allow people to go and be counted.
“Indeed, census enumerators who will be visiting our homes have been recruited from the local neighbourhoods and will in most cases be known to the residents…They will also be wearing branded T-shirts and will be carrying identification cards,” The president said.
Security is to be increased on these nights as the enumerators will be visiting homes from 6pm till 10pm at night.
