Cameroonians detained in Gabon

    Several Cameroonians have been detained by immigration officials in Libreville, Gabon. Immigration officials explained that the detainees did not have regular residence papers. They were reportedly hired by a building firm from Cameroon, to work as bricklayers on a building site in that country.

    Relations between Cameroon and its neighbours in the south, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, have not been the best for many years now. Cameroonians living in both countries have been exposed to hostilities, harassment and expulsion by immigration authorities and some xenophobic citizens.

    This is not the first time such an incident is taking place in either Gabon or Equatorial Guinea. Reports say the people of both countries do not like Cameroonians partly because they are very enterprising, but also because they are perceived to be criminals and deceitful. Apart from extorting money and property from the people and disappearing, many Cameroonians are equally accused of taking part in heinous crimes.

    Whatever the case, commentators believe that at a time when countries of various regions worldwide are breaking barriers and facilitating movement of goods and persons, it was too bad that countries of the CEMAC zone have refused to be genuine friends.
