During the meeting, the representative of the National Hydrocarbons Corporation, SNH, Ako Mengot revealed that Glencore obtained a permit from the government captioned the “Matanda Block” to exploit the natural resources, mainly petroleum and natural gas around the Wouri Estuary.
As a result they are carrying out an information campaign and also feasibility studies on the negative and positive impact of their work.
The Director of Operations for Glencore, Owen Jackson explained that Glencore is a petroleum exploiting company in Switzerland with branches in many different countries including England where it is based.
As part of the ground work for the start of the company, Glencore will be carrying out seismic surveys from February 2009 for four months to test the presence of oil. The process involves laying cables on the seabed for experiments and blasting them with the air gun to obtain specific data.
