Cameroon to explore prospects of oil

    Cameroon is considering exploring oil in that country. Feasibility study for this prospect is to start soon. A Swiss Oil Exploration Company, Glencore is preparing to explore oil in Cameroon precisely in the Limbe III council area of Bimbia in the South West province.

    The Mayor of Limbe III council, Samuel Mokate, revealed during a familiarisation and sensitisation meeting with local authorities of the area by Glencore. Representatives of government and National Hydrocarbons Corporation were with him.

    Samuel Mokate pointed out that sustainable development and the emancipation of any community is only possible if the people cease from living in the past and concentrate on building a solid future with all the development stakeholders and partners who want to work with the council area.

    During the meeting, the representative of the National Hydrocarbons Corporation, SNH, Ako Mengot revealed that Glencore obtained a permit from the government captioned the “Matanda Block” to exploit the natural resources, mainly petroleum and natural gas around the Wouri Estuary.

    As a result they are carrying out an information campaign and also feasibility studies on the negative and positive impact of their work.

    The Director of Operations for Glencore, Owen Jackson explained that Glencore is a petroleum exploiting company in Switzerland with branches in many different countries including England where it is based.

    As part of the ground work for the start of the company, Glencore will be carrying out seismic surveys from February 2009 for four months to test the presence of oil. The process involves laying cables on the seabed for experiments and blasting them with the air gun to obtain specific data.

    There were also explanations on the impact of the project on the environment both physical i.e. forest water and human i.e. the people.
