Cameroon: Roar Over Hikes In Commodity Prices

  1. Solomon Tembang Mforgham

There is an outcry in Cameroon over the fluctuating hike in the prices of some basic commodities.

The cost of sugar in local market’s and provision stores is inconsistent. The price fluctuation is a constant worry to consumers of one of the most widely consumed commodities in households.

In spite of the measures taken by the Ministry of Trade to ensure that a packet of sugar sells at FCFA 560, some unscrupulous traders still sell the commodity for as much as FCFA 1000 a packet.

The actions taken by government to regulate the price are yet to bear fruits.

The present roar over the cost of sugar comes at a time when the Ministry of Trade and one of the country’s fresh fish importers, Congelcam, have been exchanging blows over the cost of mackerel, one of the most consumed specie of fish.

Government, through the Ministry of Trade summoned Congelcam to sell mackerel at FCFA 900 per kilo down from the present FCFA 1100.

Congelcam has been arguing to no avail that the price imposed by government does not reflect all costs incurred.

In a bid to protect consumers, the Ministry of Trade has been placing a keen eye on basic commodities and has also been checking price hikes.

It is also worth recalling that in February 2008 there were nationwide protests in Cameroon over increase in prices of food and other basic commodities that led to the death of many and several others injured.
