The publisher of one of Cameroon's private newspapers, Anecdote, Pierre Amougou Belinga, has been sued by a university don, Professor Jean Emmanuel Pondi, over a report in the newspaper alleging that the university lecturer is a homosexual. The plaintiff is suing for defamation after the newspaper carried an article describing Jean Emmanuel Pondi as a homosexual.

The case was called up at the Ekounou Court of First Instance in the Cameroonian capital, Yaounde, recently. During the second session, lawyers of the defence were questioning the rejection of two preliminary objections raised at the start of hearing.

Professor Jean Emmanuel Pondi has vowed to re-establish his reputation, arguing that by accusing him of homosexuality; the Anecdote Newspaper has not only tarnished his image but that of his family and the university where he lectures.

It is worth indicating that in the disputed article, the newspaper does not only describe the university professor as a homosexual but even goes further to establish a close link between him and the jailed former Minister of Territorial Administration, Marafa Hamidou Yaya.

It would be recalled that a few years back, the same newspaper stirred a storm when it published a list of some top-ranking officials both within government and business who were said to be homosexuals.
