Cameroon: Lions gear up for 3 top friendlies

    The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are well on course for their 2010 World Cup campaign billed for the rainbow country, South Africa. After the May 3 international friendly against the reigning world champions, Italy, the team has three more high-level international friendly matches.

    According to the Cameroon Football Federation [FECAFOOT] and in an interview granted some Japanese journalists currently in Cameroon, deputy trainer of the Lions, Frenchman Yves Colleu mentioned that on Saturday, May 29, Cameroon’s national team will take on their counterparts of Slovakia.

    The game has been slated for Klagenfurt, Austria. Kick-off is 14H Cameroon Time and 13H GMT. Then on June 1, the Lions fly to Lisbon, Portugal to play the team of Cristiano Ronaldo, the current World Best Player, who is trading his football knowhow at the Spanish La Liga club, Real of Madrid.

    Belgrade, Serbia will be the next rendezvous for the squad of Paul Le Guen. The Cameroon – Serbia football showpiece has been programmed for Saturday, June 5. Suggestively, it will be the last international friendly for the Lions six days to the take off of the MTN-sponsored FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

    In an interview broadcast on Cameroon Radio & Television, CRTV, Tuesday, former World Cup player with the Indomitable Lions, Victor Ndip Akem, advised that the Lions should not only concentrate on friendlies, they should also take off some time and stay in camp for about three weeks, where the team will be playing together and pursuing other intensive training exercises.

    As the Lions’ technical bench continues to fine-tune their squad for South Africa 2010, 30 selected local players will begin a five-day training session in Yaounde from April 12 – 16. Le Guen and his collaborators are warm about having about two or three local players join the Lions’ den for the world football fiesta, which opens June 11 and winds up July 11 in South Africa.

    While Cameroon will play in Group E, alongside Japan, Holland and Denmark, Slovakia was drawn in Group F with current World Cup holder, Italy, New Zealand and Paraguay. Serbia is in Group D with Germany, Australia and another African team, the Black Stars of Ghana.
