Farming in Cameroon has ceased to be a business for the poor who are struggling for survival. Constant Bala, a 35-year old man resigned from civil service and ventured into village farming for which he is proud. This photo report shows his farm, some 25 km from Yaounde.

Bala lives in the Minkan village, where he owns large fields and seven fish pools. He and his neighbours and their family members spends at least 8 hours in the fields.

“I have not other incomes but those generated by my field and pools”, Bala told me in early June. Thanks to his mobile phone, he can call the Service d’Appui aux Initiatives Locales de Développement, a local rural support body for free counselling about production, sales and other crucial solutions.

“The telephone has become a weapon for farmers”, he concludes.
