Cameroonian football fans have shown a sense of solidarity with their football icon Samuel Fils Eto'o. Most of them, who were initially with him at FC Barcelona, have now switched their support to the striker's new club Inter-Milan.

From the sales of supporters’ jerseys as captured by this reporter in the municipality of Buea, it was gathered that the sales of Barcelona supporter jerseys have dropped in favour of Inter-Milan’s, as a result of Eto’o’s recent move from the Spanish La Liga to the Italian Serie A club.

Augustin Nkemta, who sells sporting gears in Buea said when Barcelona won the Champions League with Eto’o, the sales of Barcelona jerseys augmented, but since Eto’o moved house from Barça to Inter, no Barcelona supporter jersey has been sold. “I will be going in for the Inter supporter jerseys. A lot of people are now asking for them with the inscription of Eto’o’s name and number,” Nkemta noted.

The Manager of Uncle Sam Model, Molyko, Buea, Billion Socred, said; “More than 50 fans of Eto’o have already booked for the Inter supporter jerseys. I will be travelling abroad to bring that and more.”

Socred added that he is going to become a fan of the Italian league now, with the presence of Eto’o out there. He added: “Wherever Eto’o goes, I will follow.”

Nkemta will differ from Socred, arguing that his support for Inter will depend on how Eto’o performs at the Italian Club.

In the final of the Italian Super Cup, played Saturday, at the Bird Nest Stadium in Beijing, China, Eto’o’s fans, were once more in communion with him. Echoes across Cameroon, have it that Eto’o’s supporters were all glued on their TV sets, watching him as he kick-started his five-year sojourn at Inter.

Some fans we talked to, described Eto’o’s debut as largely successful as he ended the match with a goal to his credit. Though Inter-Milan lost 1-2 to Lazio, a lot of Eto’o’s fans in Cameroon were of the opinion that he has started the 2009/2010 Calcio Season in grand style.
