Cameroon: 800 People To Be Displaced For Seaport

    A study carried out by a team of Dutch, French and Cameroonian consultants on the social and environmental impact of the construction of the Kribi seaport in the South Region of Cameroon has revealed that some 800 people would be displaced from 46 villages along the coastline where the sea port shall be constructed.

    The recommendations were made during a meeting in Kribi recently attended by administrative authorities, traditional rulers and representatives of the affected populations.

    The populations that are to be displaced have expressed the wish that the project kicks off as soon as possible in order to foster the development of their area. The construction phase is expected to begin in October while exploitation begins in 2013.

    Meanwhile, a company known as EDEATECH has taken over the production of paper pulp in the country falling the fall of CAWCAM. The new company signed an undertaking to revamp the paper pulp sector recently during a ceremony presided over by Prime Minister Philemon Yang.

    The undertaking was signed after ESEATECH was issued the authorisation and licence to operate in the country.
