CAF slaps fine on Esperance de Tunis

    The Congo-Kinshasa football club, Tout Puissant (TP) Mazembe might have won the prestigious 2010 Orange sponsored CAF Champions League finals at the expense of Tunisian club, Esperance Sportif of Tunis, EST, but the dust of the ugly happenings during the return leg in Tunis are yet to settle.

    In its meeting held in Kigali, Rwanda, on January 10 2011, CAF Disciplinary Board examined the documents related to the 2010 CAF Champions League games pitting EST of Tunisia vs TP Mazembe of the DR Congo. The date was November 13 2010, the venue Tunis, Tunisia and the match was the return leg final of the Orange Champions League 2010.

    Following a series of CAF Disciplinary Board decisions, carried on the CAF website, with the references; DC001–KGL-10.1.11 and DC002–KGL-10.1.11, the following sanctions were meted on EST; Suspension of player Ayman Ben Amor for the next six (6) CAF interclubs matches and fine imposed of USD 10,000. This is in violation of CAF Disciplinary Code articles; Article 82 “PRINCIPLES OF CONDUCT”

    Article 83 “RESPONSIBILITY” paragraphs 1 and 2.

    Due to the repetition of incidents and warnings and reprimands, EST will play its next two home CAF interclubs matches behind closed doors without spectators. This is in violation of Article 100 “PLAYING A MATCH WITHOUT SPECTATORS.”

    Additional financial Sanctions of 52.500 USD detailed as follows: USD 10,000 for usage of flares and flaming substances and throwing of missiles. USD 10,000 for failing to control the spectators USD 5,000 for not abiding with CAF instructions during the game. USD 15,000 for abusive and offensive language and gestures against CAF and its President as well as throwing bottles at the VIP tribune. USD 12,500 for unsporting and regrettable behavior of the EST delegation at the medals ceremony. This is in violation of Article 128 Paragraphs 1 and 2 “MISCONDUCT AGAINST PLAYERS OF PERSONS OTHER THAN MATCH OFFICIALS” and Article 131 “OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOUR” Paragraphs 1 and 2.

    On their part, TP Mazembe were fined USD 5,000 for the irresponsible behaviour of the visiting delegation. This is in violation of Article 83 ’RESPONSIBILITY’ paragraph 1 and 3.

    According to the CAF Disciplinary Board, TP Mazembe is been penalised for disrupting the security arrangements that their delegation caused during the said match.

    The CAF release concluded; “The Disciplinary Board also reminds all clubs the content of CAF circular 183-184 sent to all National Associations which stipulates that CAF seriously condemns the usage of flares, missiles or any other dangerous objects and highlight the importance of arranging adequate security plans or else heavy sanctions will be applied.”
