Britain freezes new aid to Malawi

    Britain which is the biggest donor for Malawi is reported to have frozen new aid to the southern African country.

    Media reports in Malawi say that Britain made this decision on Thursday and this is expected to be a big blow to the southern African nation.

    Malawi depends heavily on donor aid and most of its projects have materialised due to foreign aid.

    The development comes barely a month after Malawi's president Bingu wa Mutharika deported Britain's ambassador after a sour relationship.

    In retaliation Britain also expelled Malawi's ambassador to Britain.

    The civil society in the country and other activists rebuked Mutharika on his decision of deporting Britains ambassador and many feared this would bring several repucations to Malawi.

    Media reports quoted a press statement from Department of International Dvelopment(DfID) as saying that Britain is reviweing its relations with Malawi.

    "The UK is reviewing its relations with Malawi, including DFID's aid programme. New aid commitments are on hold while this review takes place," the statement said.


    The DfID statement also said International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell had written to Mutharika to express his concerns about corruption and government accountability.
