Bank for women opens in Tanzania

    A Bank that is aimed at uplifting the living conditions of women has opened in Tanzania's capital city Dar es Salaam. Media reports say it is good news for women who still lag behind in several areas and efforts are being made in the continent to increase the number of women in top positions.

    Tanzania’s Minister of Community Development, Gender and Children expressed happiness with the launch of the bank adding that it would empower women.

    Media reports said the bank only needs applicants to open their accounts with $2 adding that women only are required to bring an ID card and passport as further material to open an account.

    The Bank’s Managing Director Margareth Mattaba Chacha, was quoted by the BBC report as saying that they want more women to join the bank adding that they were ready to assist women step by step.

    "We know some women hesitate to come forward - they are too shy and think they don't know anything. But here we're going to have a big group of professionals to take women through step-by-step until we really reach our women," said Chacha.

    Though the bank is said to be targeting women, it said men were also free to open accounts. According to the report the opening of the Dar es Salaam branch is just the beginning of a countrywide network.
