Two tankers carrying petroleum products had fallen over each other at the Fougeroulle Company axis, close to the old toll gate along the Port Harcourt Aba Expressway where a perennial water log situation had become a deep pond to frustrate movement for close to six months. The heat from the exhaust pipe of one of the tankers had ignited fire creating astir situation.
One of the tankers had fallen over earlier in the morning of Thursday 17th June 2010 spilling its content into the water as it pulled through the logged water. The taunts who were always there to do quick business were assisting the driver to keep the right path but the tanker slipped off the track and capsized. The second tanker that came half an hour later pulled through gradually but suddenly jerked two times and tilted towards the other tanker. The accidental friction of the metal body of the tanks and the heat from the exhaust pipe created a spark and busted the tanks. What was seen was a thick flame that started to spread on the water and unto perimeter wall, trees and vehicles. That created a panic and pandemonium.
Passengers and motorists caught sight of the what had happened. They fidgetted, scapered to avoid being trapped by the wide spreading fire. But a commuter got trapped between motion vehicles briskly making a reverse movement. He got badly bruised on his waist region and became became unconscious.Another unlucky commuter was unlucky and was feared dead like his colleague that was trapped in the pool of water that had become unceasing 'dead sea'.
One of the tankers' driver and a taunt got trapped in the fire that burnt them terribly. They were rushed to a private Hospital close to the De World International Secondary School close to Rumukwurushi/Eleme Flyover Junction and were put on emergency treatment.
Officers of the state fire service and men of the Federal Road Safety Commission and the Police mobilized to the scene to forestall a futher spread of the fire that had already burnt down a high tension cabal owned by Power Holding Company of Nigeria. And to also to stem quick robbery by taunts.
Mr. Patrick Ordinaka who does business in the area and station manager of Total filling station close to the water logged place witnessed the situation. They said the designated authority had looked away from the deplorable road condition which had taken a toll on all regular users of the road and pleaded with the government drain to convey surface water away from the areas.
They want the goevernemnt, both State and Federal to swing into action to tackle the situation by constructing the road and providing a functional drain in the area.
The Port Harcourt Expressway is a Federal Governemnt road and its maintenance is solely its responsibility. Some five months ago, FERMA, a Federal government road maintenance agency had worked on that section of the road but the high fences of companies around the area had made it difficult for water to run off. The trapped water just logged to soften the earth and weaken the basement of the road until it caved in.
