Luis Montes pulled one back for Pachuca, and Gimenez's free-kick took the game to extra time. A Damian Alvarez goal and another from Gimenez gave Pachuca victory.
Pachuca will play South American champions LDU of Ecuador in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Al Ahly will play for fifth place on Thursday against the losers of Sunday's quarter-final between Japan's Gamba Osaka and Adelaide United of Australia. "We panicked," said Ahly's Portuguese coach Manuel Jose. "Clearly the players couldn't handle the pressure.

"No excuses, it was mental weakness."
