African mining summit set for Ethiopia

    African mineral extractive industry and mining experts are expected to start the implementation of the African Mining Vision during a summit to be held in Addis Abba, Ethiopia this fall.

    The "Second African Union Conference of Ministers Responsible for Mineral Resources Development” will run from December 12-16, 2001 under a theme, “Building a Sustainable Future for Africa’s Extractive Industry: From Vision to Action.”

    The conference being organized by the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) will bring together African ministers responsible for mineral resources development, African experts in mining and mineral resources development, representatives of African chambers of mines and industry, African private sector, academia, UN agencies, NGOs and other development partners to discuss the implementation of the Africa Mining Vision based on the action plan developed during the first conference.

    “The conference will also include a development partners’ round table on the support of the vision,” organisers said.

    Organisers said the framework report on the Review of Africa’s Mineral Regimes will also be availed for consideration during the conference.

    The report is the culmination of review of Africa's mineral policies, laws and regulations led by the International Study Group on Africa's Mineral Regimes.
