23 Malawians killed in SA

    Twenty three Malawians perished in a head on collision between a truck and minibus they were travelling on in SA, police say. The accident happened on the NI road between Beaufort West and Laingsburg in Western Cape Province. Four travellers survived but they were in serious conditions at Worcester and Laingsburg hospitals in the province.

    A statement released by South African police service {SAPS} spokesperson, November Filander, in the Western Cape said all the dead people were Malawian nationals.

    He said the minibus Tax was travelling from Cape Town to Malawi and collided with a truck which was travelling from Laingsburg in the direction to Beaufort West.

    “The circumstances surrounding this incident were still unclear .We opened an inquest docket and the investigation is continuing” reads part of the statement.

    It says when the police arrived at the scene they found 22 people killed with six others seriously injured, and the twenty three died in hospital.

    Filander said post-mortem was underway in Oudtshoorn. Meanwhile Malawi police service spokesperson Willie Mwaluka said they are waiting for an official communication from international police [Interpol].
