2010 C'WEALTH.MW participation in doubts.


  1. With few days left before the start of the 2010 commonwealth games in New Delhi India. Malawi’s participation at the event is in serious doubt as the local committee is failing to source funds amounting to US $200 000.

    The money carters for transportation of officials ,allowances for the athletes and accommodation. However the international Olympic committee [IOC] has already provided air tickets for the 41 athletes who are expected to participate.

    The athletes are expected to leave on September 30 for the games but the current situations has forced local committee ,Malawi Olympic committee [MOC] and Ministry of sports and youth development for plead for private sector support which they have received a Luke response.

    Only two private sectors, a construction firm Mota-engil and Cross roads hotel have come to the committee‘s request when they donated around US $1250 and US$ 156.5 respectively towards the trip.

    But minister of sports and youth development DR Lucious Kanyumba has assured the sporting fraternity that government will come to the rescue if the private sector will not meet the shortfall.
    However MOC acting president Jappie Mhango admitted that his committee is under pressure looking at the time factor.
    “We are now feeling the pressure because at the moment we have not sourced the short fall because the private sectors have not been forth coming. Our only hope is government if they can come to our rescue” he said.
    Malawi will send athletes in nine sporting disciplines including netball ,boxing swimming and tennis.
