Afghan government helicopters and trucks deliver aid, headed to areas hardest hit by Wednesday's earthquake, including Barmal and Gayan in eastern Afghanistan's Paktika province.

At least 1,000 people died and 1,500 were injured, the authorities reported, according to the state news agency Bakhtar. Mountainous terrain and overnight rain hamper rescue efforts.
