Aubameyang aims to emulate Thierry Henry, handed 14 shirt

Gabonese striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on transfer deadline signed for London side Arsenal for a club-record fee reportedly around $79.2 million.

The former Dortmund player has set his sights on an Arsenal great, Frenchman Thierry Henry, who described as a role model in an interview with the club website.

“The club has such a big history and great players like Thierry Henry. He was fast and scored a lot of goals. he is an example for us strikers,” said on signing for the club.

Incidentally he has been handed the number 14 shirt which was made famous by Thierry during his time at the club. The last person to have worn the shirt was England international Theo Walcott who has since transferred to Everton.

Aubameyang’s fee is believed to be an African transfer record. At the club-record level, his fee eclipsed the 46.5 million pounds paid to French side Olympique Lyonnais for forward Alexandre Lacazette last year.

Aubameyang has scored 98 goals in 144 Bundesliga games for the German side and had a hand in 172 goals in 213 matches in all competitions for his former club.

The 28-year-old is Gabon’s all-time top goalscorer with 23 goals from 56 matches and was named the African Footballer of the Year in 2015.
