On today’s travel segment we took a trip to the island of Gorée whixh lies south of Cape Verde Peninsula, opposite Dakar.
Island of Gorée , a sanctuary for reconciliation [Travel]
This small island from the 15th to the 19th century, was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast.
Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French.The island about 900 meters is currently home to about 1600 people.
This rocky island is quite peculiar because of its extreme centrality of its geographical position between the north and the south, the nearest point on the continent to the Americas.
It is said to be an excellent strategic position offering a safe haven for anchoring ships, hence the name “Good Rade” by the Dutch and the French renamed it « Goree » – meaning “good harbour”.
Today it continues to serve as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation .
