Benin enforce ban on 'bromate' in Bread [The Morning Call]

The Beninoise government has closed 21 bakeries in Cotonou and Calavi.

The ministry of commerce says since september it discovered potassium bromate, a chemical carcinogen being used in the bakeries.

Potassium bromate swells the dough and makes more bread. It had been banned in Benin since 2005.

The authorities also cited a lack of hygiene, and outdated flours.
