Tripoli International Airport to undergo $78m rebuilding by Italians

Tripoli International Airport will finally be able to resume operations after being shut down from several damages caused by clashes between militias in July 2014.

The Libyan authorities have signed an agreement with some Italian companies to rebuild the terminal. The cost amounts to over $78 million.

Sami al-Aich, Project Director, Ministry of Transport said: “The project consists of the construction of two terminals, the first for international flights and the second for domestic flights, with a total area of 30,000 meters squared. The first terminal should be ready to accommodate travelers in ten months, while the second should be ready in eighteen months”.

So far the Libyan companies have been operating in a former military air base. But insecurity remains a major problem.

Violence erupted on Tuesday between armed groups around the airport, disrupting air traffic.

Most foreign companies have not been flying to the country since 2014 because of the insecurity.
