African cultural dances [Culture on TMC]

In this week’s edition of This is Culture, Linnete Bahati talks about the different types of dances the continent has.

Apart from having fun, dance is a means of marking life experiences in the African continent.

From encouraging abundant crops, honoring kings and queens, celebrating weddings, marking rites of passage, to other ceremonial occasions. African dances are as varied and changing as the communities that create them.

Although many types incorporate spirited, vigorous movement, there are also others that are more reserved or stylized. African dances vary widely by region and ethnic community.

In this edition, Linnete talks about Rwanda’s intore dance, Uganda’s Baganda dance and South Africa’s Indlamu dance from the Zulu community.
