Millions of dollars raised through social media for famine-hit Somalia [Hi-Tech]

6.2 million people in Somalia need humanitarian assistance as they face the peak effect of severe drought that hit the Horn of Africa.

Somalia could face its third famine in 25 years after the previous crisis in 2011 that killed about 260,000 people, WHO warns.

These realities touched the heart of French social media star Jerome Jarre who started the #LoveArmyForSomalia campaign with the hashtag #TurkishAirlinesHelpSomalia to get the airline’s support to send food supplies to Somalia.

He got their support and raised $1 million in 24 hours with the help of international celebrities to pay for the food aid.

Over $2 million have been raised, 7 African countries out of the 54 donated and 60 tonnes of food aid was flown to Somalia on Monday.
