The 89th Academy Awards [Culture on TMC]

In this week’s edition of “This is Culture”, Linnete Bahati talks about the 89th annual Oscars ceremony in the United States. It is an event many people were looking forward to and now we know who have won the awards.

Over the past two years, it’s been an all white Oscars but this year proved to be a much stronger year for diversity. It’s not just whites and their productions who were up for an Oscar.

Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor for his role in “Moonlight”.

Viola Davis won in the category of best supporting actress for her role in “Fences”.

The most talked about category was that of best picture. The two-horse race in the category was between romantic musical comedy “La La Land” and “Moonlight”. Despite a confusion, “Moonlight” emerged as the actual winner in the category.
