Gabon coach Jorge Costa's contract extended till the end of AFCON

Portuguese coach Jorge Costa’s contract has been extended as coach of Gabon national team till the end of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted by the central African country.

“The Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) decided to renew the contract of the coaching staff led by Jorge Costa for a period of six months,” the federation said in a statement on its Facebook page on Wednesday.

FEGAFOOT on June 30 announced it will not renew the contract of the former Portuguese international because of poor results since his arrival in July 2014. In his last 5 matches, he won 2, drew one and lost 2 games.

In late June, six months to the 2017 AFCON, Gabon announced their intention to recruit an experienced coach who is ready to live in Libreville and present a two-year strategy.

No top coach secured the position which is deemed as very lucrative.

Jorge Costa is among the highest paid coaches in Africa receiving 70,000 euros monthly.

The Gabonese team has a tough challenge in their group for the 2018 World Cup qualification as they face Morocco, Ivory Coast and Mali.

The AFCON will be held between January 21 to February 12, 2017.
