14 million dollars diverted from DRC's public service since January

The Democratic Republic of Congo finance minister, Michel Bongongo, said $14 million have been embezzled from government departments since the begining of 2016.

According to the minister, the funds were originally intended for development initiatives in the health and education sectors in four main provinces that recorded the highest cases of fraud.

Also, the ministry unearthed cases of “ghost workers” in central Kongo which is among the provinces affected.

“We have 547 registered workers out of which 510 are fictitious,” said the minister.

Several cases of fraud have been reported in a number of government departments since the beginning of the year in the mineral rich country.
