The UN repatriates Burundi peacekeepers in CAR

The United Nations has announced it will repatriate three Burundian officers from the Central African Republic over violations of human rights.

According to a UN source in Bangui, Pierre Niyonzima, Jimmy Rusheshe and Jean Mushinantwari are due to be sent back to Burundi to face accusations of rights violations.

The three were deployed as military observers in the scandal-tainted country and are alleged to have been involved with violating human rights.

MINUSCA mission spokesman, Vladamir Monteiro, told AFP that everything was in place for their departure from the country as quickly as possible adding that the trio were unfit to serve in UN ranks according to an internal probe.

The UN mission has recently been hit by a wave of allegations of sexual abuse by peacekeepers.

The UN also plans to send back peacekeepers from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo who also face allegations of sexual abuse.

Last year, UN-Secretary General Ban Ki-moon fired the head of the MINUSCA force over the mounting number of sexual abuse cases.

Jane Holl Lute was recently appointed as the special coordinator tasked with scaling up the UN response to the sexual abuse allegations.
