Mining Indaba opens in Cape Town

The annual Mining Indaba on investing in African mining is currently underway in South Africa’s Cape Town.

Under the theme “investing beyond the mining cycle”, the event presents an opportunity to discuss investment strategies despite a bleak future for the sector.

More than 7,000 delegates from 100 nations will attend the four-day event to explore ways to strengthen the sector amid falling demand and commodity prices.

“Setting the benchmark as the world-class mining investment event and presiding as the convener of global and influential deal-makers to provide the platform that channels billions of dollars in capitalising the African mining value chain remains our core focus and we intend to deliver on this promise for the 2016 annual conference,” Jonathan Moore, Managing Director

of the Mining Indaba said in a press release .

5,000 direct and indirect jobs have been created as a result of the Mining Indaba for the past eight years.

Billions of US dollars of foreign investment has been put into African mining during the annunal event over the years. The Mining Indaba has been an industry event for more than 20 years.

Mining operations contribute about 30-35 per cent of all exports from the developed country.
