S. Africa schoolgirls instigate protest for 'skinny pants' as part of uniform

South Africa

Two South African schoolgirls are said to have instigated a protest calling for skinny pants to be incorporated into the school uniform. Authorities confirmed that the two had created a WhatsApp group to drive their agenda.

The two unnamed students according to a media reports last Friday caused the disruption of teaching and learning at the Hoerskool Pretoria Wes facility located in the capital, Pretoria.

The said protest continued to this morning as students were reported to have boycotted lessons over their dress code demands.

The Guateng province under whose jurisdiction the school falls confirmed the protests and boycott of classes but added that lessons had ‘resumed as per normal.’

“Officials dispatched to the school this morning confirmed that the protest emanated from two unruly learners who transgressed the code of conduct regarding uniform,” an official statement read.

They further confirmed that the said students came back from a 7-day suspension over the issue to instigate the protests. “Their 7 days lapsed on Thursday, wherein they began to coerce other learners to force the school to allow them to wear skinny pants; hence the said disruption on Friday.”

They did not state what further actions will be taken against the two girls.
