Kenya’s president and candidate in the upcoming presidential election, Uhuru Kenyatta has rewarded the country’s IAAF U18 winning team 100,000 shillings ($963) each and a holiday trip.
According to local media The Star Kenya, the team has been sponsored on a four-day trip to the coastal city of Mombasa aboard the newly inaugurated SGR train.

The team, which competed in the recently held IAAf World U18 Championships hosted in Nairobi, received the package at the State House after symbolically handing over the national flag to the president.

The president congratulated the team and the officials for making Kenya proud and proving that the country can host an international event.
“You have made our country proud. That week of the IAAF championships put Kenya on the map as the event brought together teams from across the globe … This shows that Kenya can host major sporting events. We are the home of athletics. We are the home of champions,” Kenyatta said.
The Kenyan team won 15 medals – four gold, seven silver and four bronze – to finish fourth in the world.
South Africa topped the medals table with a total 10 medals – five gold, three silver and two bronze followed by Peoples Republic of China and Cuba with eleven and eight medals respectively.
