Ugandan music star sworn in as MP

Ugandan music star Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine has been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Kyadondo East in the capital, Kampala.

Bobi Wine who ran as an independent candidate in the elections will represent the Kyadondo East constituency in central Kampala until 2021.

He has pledged to fight for and well represent his people as a legislator.

Bobi Wine won a by-election sweeping 77.7 percent of vote cast on June 29, beating four other contenders.

The seat was declared vacant in April after the candidate for Forum for Democratic Change, Apollo Kantinti’s win was annulled by a High Court for non-compliance with electoral laws.

Other celebrities have also taken to politics in Uganda. Comedian Kato Lubwama, soldier and singer General Elly Tumwine, and radio personality Peter Ssematimba are among the many celebrities turned politicians.

Bobi Wine has charmed his followers even more, but only time will tell whether his performance in Parliament will be as outstanding.
