New talents grace Congo's fashion cult [Culture on The Morning Call]

The Morning Call

The Republic of Congo recently held a fashion event titled ‘The Carousel of Fashion’. It was an event for up and coming fashion designers and hairstylists that turned out to be a great success.

It all began with a hair styling competition which was quite interesting to watch as the hair stylists from the country and as far as Ivory Coast did their best to awe the judges.

Apart from the hair styling, fashion designers from the west and central parts of the continent showcased their designing skills.

I was able to catch up with some of the designers to just get their impressions following the event.

“Am very excited. This is the first time am participating in a show this big. that is the 4th edition of the Carousel de la mode. My models looked great. I loved how they wore my outfits. Am really really happy. It was very fun, very exciting and I’ll remember this for a long time,” said Jessica Evoundou from the Republic of Congo.

Dianne Rolando Nana from Ivory Coast is optimistic about her future in the fashion industry:

“It’s been precisely a year that I have been in this industry. I presented my first collection of outfits this evening. The competition was tough but for a start am proud of what I did and I believe in the future it will be even better.”

“My impressions of the show are very good. It’s a new start for me. I started out in fashion about 6 years ago and I took a break for a while. So for me, it’s a way to relaunch myself and I am quite optimistic about the future of my work and especially Congolese fashion because i am Congolese and this event which took place in Congo makes me quite optimistic and very proud,” said Peho-Lynne Omba, another fashion designer from Congo.

Apart from that, I also met a lady whose work is quite impressive. NTADI Brechie makes ornaments in the country and what impressed me about her is the fact that she only used 250 CFA francs to start off her business. She took me through some of the pieces she makes.
