7-storey building collapses in Kenyan capital, at least 15 missing

Kenya

15 people are reported missing after a seven-storey apartment building in Kenya’s capital Nairobi collapsed early Tuesday morning.

The building located in Kware Pipeline, Embakasi in eastern Nairobi was reported to have developed cracks and dozens of residents were evacuated before it collapsed.

The police told local media that 121 people have been rescued while the Saint John’s Ambulance service said 15 were missing.

Kenya Red Cross is conducting an ongoing search and rescue operation at the collapse site with other security and disaster management services.

Last year, over 30 people were killed when a six-storey building collapsed in Nairobi’s Huruma district leaving hundreds missing with over 100 rescued alive.

The collapse was partly due to torrential rains and the poor quality of construction. The owners were arrested and arraigned.
