Democratic Republic Of Congo
The International Criminal Court on Friday awarded the victims of an attack committed by Congolese warlord Germain Katanga collective reparations of one million dollars.
The reparations include symbolic compensation of USD 250 to each of the 297 victims to be added to the collective reparations which will come in the form of support for housing, education aid among others, the court said.
Germain Katanga was sentenced in May 2014 to 12 years in prison for crime against humanity and four war crimes for attacking the village of Bogoro in the Democratic Republic of Congo in February 2003.
The judges decided in November 2015 to review the case and reduced the sentence to three years and eight months.
“Because of Mr Katanga’s indigence, the Trust Fund for Victims was invited to consider using its resources for the reparations and to present an implementation plan by June 27, 2017,” the court added during the ruling on reparations.
