Cameroon's title winning coach Broos eyes South Africa job

South Africa

Fresh from winning the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title, Cameroon coach Hugo Broos has applied to manage South Africa’s football team.

Broos led the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to their fifth AFCON title beating Egypt 2-1 in the final on February 5.

The position to coach the Bafana Bafana team has also attracted other top names such as Roberto Mancini, Giovanni Trapattoni, Hassan Shihata, Samson Siasia, Lothar Mattheus and Bernd Schuster.

The Belgium’s representative revealed that Broos had sent his application to the South African Football Association (SAFA) but had not received any feedback.

However, Cameroon’s football association has dismissed the reports linking its coach with the job as ‘rumours’ and said Broos was still under contract with the team.

“Following rumors of contact between the national coach of Cameroon and the South African federation,
We have the honor to inform the public that no contact has so far been made between Hugo Broos and the Football Association of South Africa, “ said Cameroon’s press team officer Vincent Paul Atangana.

“Not surprisingly, the national coach of Cameroon received a few proposals after the victorious participation of the Indomitable Lions at CAN 2017. But none has yet received a favorable outcome. Hugo Broos is still under contract with Cameroon and is going to manage until the end of the contract,” the statement added.

The Bafana Bafana have not had a coach since December 2016 when Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba was fired for misconduct.

South Africa is aiming to qualify for the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Nations Cup.
