President Muhammadu Buhari did not donate even a dollar to Hillary Clinton’s campaign, the presidency has said on Friday.
According to Mallam Garba Shehu, official spokesperson of the president, it was sad that a false claim that the President donated $500m to the campaign of the former US Secretary of State ‘‘has gone viral, sadly Nigerians are believing it!’‘
‘‘President Buhari’s Nigeria doesn’t have this kind of money to throw around. Even if the money is there, this President is the least likely person to give it as donation, and for what?’‘ he said.

Whiles dismissing the donation claims that was made by a group purporting to be ‘‘the American Black Group for Democracy,’‘ Shehu said it was Nigeria that was expecting the return of looted funds from the United States government.
The group claimed that Mr Buhari’s donation was likely to create a rift between the Nigerian government and the incoming US administration led by President-Elect Donald John Trump.

He disclosed that among others, a government account had been supplied to the US authorities for the return of a million dollars. He added that judgment on $480m Abacha loot had been won and the Attorney General was expected to meet US authorities on steps for the return.
A Nigerian news portal, ‘The Cable’ however run a Fact Check on the claims by the group and rated their allegations as false. Apparently the Black America Group for Democracy’ was a non existent entity.
According to US laws, no donor can give over $100,200 to a political campaign, only American citizens are allowed to donate to campaigns and also financial records indicate that Hillary’s campaign raised a little above $500m.
‘‘For the video to be true, it would mean President Muhammadu Buhari literally bank-rolled the entire Clinton campaign illegally, which is totally false, considering publicly available and verifiable data by the US government and the global media,’‘ the Cable concluded.
